Development
The aim of the overall look was to have a retro pixel style during the first stage of development. The original alpha was named "Blue Giant" with basic gameplay mechanics such as gravity and switching between floor and ceiling. Below are some of the concept and examples we designed together.
We then decided to change not only the original gameplay mechanics but also the art direction entirely and chose a 16-bit style with a richer, vibrant colour to make the characters, enemies, items and backgrounds to stand out.
Dave, our protagonist, went through a complete change in design. With the new changes, he did not need his original suit. From his final concept, we used him as a base to design more characters, from scientists to engineers to military space cadets. The characters again went through a second change with a cleaner look and a black outline on the left side of their bodies, acting as their shadow.
Once we had a better understanding of our game and its core mechanics, combining tower defense features with fast-paced shooter features, we worked on enemy and weapon design. We took some inspiration to movies like Alien, the Thing, the Blob and so on. Turrets had three upgrade stages while enemies came in different varieties and abilities. Items, objects and UI included below.
